Dr. Susan Wood becomes vice chancellor for academic services
RICHMOND – Dr. Susan S. Wood, currently associate vice chancellor for institutional effectiveness, has been appointed vice chancellor for academic services and research, effective immediately, Chancellor Glenn DuBois announced today.
She succeeds Dr. Monty Sullivan in that post, who leaves this month to take a post as executive vice chancellor of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System there.
Dr. Wood becomes the top academic officer for Virginia’s Community Colleges, a comprehensive system of 23 community colleges located on 40 campuses throughout the commonwealth.
“I’m delighted to make this appointment,” Dr. DuBois said. “Dr. Wood has had a significant amount of effective experience within the VCCS, from the classroom to the system office. I am confident that she will do an outstanding job in this position.”
Dr. Wood joined the system office for Virginia’s Community Colleges in 2005 as director of educational programs. In December 2005, she became assistant vice chancellor for educational programs and instructional technology. She was named associate vice chancellor for institutional effectiveness in January 2008. In that role, she has spearheaded the strategic planning process for the Virginia Community College System, leading to a new strategic plan to be unveiled and adopted later this fall to succeed the previous Dateline 2009 initiative.
She previously worked at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, where she joined the college as a charter faculty member in 1973. She served as a full professor of mathematics from 1986 to 2005. In 1992, she was a recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award sponsored by the State Council for Higher Education.
Dr. Wood has a doctorate in mathematics education and a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia, and a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech.
