Working hand in hand with Virginia’s 23 community colleges, the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education seeks to guarantee financial assistance to all students who dream of attending college.

The foundation is building an endowment that is already generating interest to provide full scholarships to selected community college students.

Donors to the fund are invited to endow a single scholarship in their name and designate it to any of Virginia’s community colleges or regions.

Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

First Lady Anne HoltonPhilanthropy leaders were honored April 23, 2008 at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond as the 2008 recipients of the Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. The program honors outstanding benefactors from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges.

First Lady Anne Holton, who is focused on improving the lives and futures of foster children in Virginia, spoke about her partnership with Virginia's Community Colleges to enhance higher education opportunities for foster children, called “Great Expectations.”

“This event is also a way to say thank you to men and women who, through their generosity, are elevating lives by expanding the opportunities of higher education,” said Chancellor Glenn DuBois in making the awards. He was assisted in the presentation by Virginia Foundation for Community College Education Chairman Chris Lumsden and Foundation Board Member Eva T. Hardy.

Foundations and Alumni

Virginia’s Community Colleges count on the generous support of foundations and alumni to ensure that they have the capacity to respond to Virginia’s growing educational needs. Especially when state resources are limited, private financial support enables community colleges to continue expanding and improving the innovative programs that serve students and businesses throughout the commonwealth.

Collectively, Virginia community college foundations are working to increase their holdings to $150 million by 2009. Since 2002, their holdings have grown from $75.2 million to $139.7 million. The foundations have spent millions more for scholarships, facilities, and faculty development.
